Tattoo Aftercare
Aftercare starts as soon as your tattoo is completed. After the completion of your tattoo, you can expect your artist to clean the tattooed area and wrap in a bandage or plastic wrap. Wrapping prevents bacteria from getting into your skin. It also protects the tattoo from rubbing on your clothes and getting irritated.
• ALWAYS wash your hands before cleaning your new tattoo.
• After a couple of hours, you can remove the wrapping.
• After removing the wrapping, clean the tattoo with cool water and antibacterial, unscented hand soap.
• After cleaning with cool, soapy water- pat dry with a cloth or paper towel.
• Apply a dime-sized amount of antibacterial ointment (A&D, Aquafor, etc.) to your new tattoo. Gently rub it in. Repeat this step 2-3 times a day everyday. After 3-4 days, switch from A&D ointment to a non-scented hand lotion.
• During healing period, keep your tattoo moisturized but not over-moisturized. Over-moisturizing can lead to your tattoo healing out improperly. Use non-scented hand lotion to moisturize 2-3 times a day, not any more or less.
• Do not swim, soak in a hot tub, or take a bath for two weeks after getting your tattoo. Also, avoid tanning.
• Stay out of direct sunlight for the first 2-3 weeks. Even healed tattoos can fade in the sun, so always use a high SPF sun-screen over your tattoos when you’re out in the sun or tanning.
• Do not scratch your tattoo or pick off any scabs; It will itch during the healing process. This process can last up to two weeks. Picking scabs/itching may remove the ink in that area and lead to patches fading or being removed altogether. If it itches, don't scratch – slap it lightly instead or rub lotion on it.
• A tattoo causes trauma to your body. Depending on the placement, the size, and an individual’s hygiene, and daily activities, healing is different for everyone. Because a tattoo is an open wound they are susceptible to infections, it is best to follow the aftercare instructions listed above to lower your risk of problems during the healing process.
• You should expect your new tattoo to be red, irritated, swollen, and possibly bruised. These are normal reactions to the tattoo area. Usually, you can anticipate 1 to 3 days for red or irritated skin to subside. If swelling or bruising occurs, this could last for up to a week, especially if tattooed in a sensitive area such as the feet.
• If signs of infection occur, consult with your physician.* We offer free touch-ups within the first 6 months after getting your tattoo. If you need a touch-up, please reach out to your artist to schedule an appointment.*
